Recommended Historical Romances
Where do I start?! A work-in-progress. Click on a title below to learn more at Goodreads. Every one of these books reflect what I love and value in an historical romance: deep emotion, attention to historical detail, carefully crafted stories, and deeply-wounded characters that heal one another.
A Lady Awakened - Every Cecilia Grant book is a treasure, but this is where you start • Desire Lines - Extraordinary medieval; sure to be on several Best of 2019 Lists • The Matrimonial Advertisement - A sweet historical; elegant writing and immersive detail; a new fave writer • Lord Carew’s Bride - A fairy tale for grown ups; Everyone rightly loves Mary Balogh, but Lord Carew’s Bride is one I re-read every few years for the country setting, and wonderful beta hero • His at Night - Every Sherry Thomas historical is extraordinary, but her “fumbling” Lord Vere is one of my favorite heroes of all time
A Talent for Trickery - First in the Thief Taker’s Series; an under-rated historical writer that I adore • Lord of Scoundrels - Everyone’s all-time favorite by the wonderful Loretta Chase, possibly the best ever • Seize the Fire - Extraordinarily cynical Naval captain anti-hero; the hottest sex scenes I’ve read that still carry emotion; Fantastic and different • The Proposition - working class hero rat-catcher Mick Tremore in a reverse Pygmalion story • The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie - a wonderful hero with different abilities, and a beautiful heart; prepare to want to devour her backlist
The Leopard Prince - my favorite Hoyt; cross-class lines romance between an aristocrat and her steward • Yours Until Dawn - Wounded, blinded hero, abandoned by his fiance, and the nurse that comes to help him heal • A Lady’s Code of Misconduct - My favorite read of 2018; No one writes like Duran • The Governess Affair - How do you choose a favorite among Courtney Milan’s historicals? A perfect novella
